Mailboxes Overview
Learn what a Mailbox is in MelMe and how it operates as a secure container for your email threads.
1. Overview
In MelMe, it is critical to understand one core rule: A Mailbox is NOT an Email Address.
Instead, a Mailbox is a secure, isolated digital storage locker (an inbox container). It holds emails, processes attachments, and manages sending records.
An Alias (the actual email address) serves as the "front door" that directs incoming letters into this mailbox container. You can connect multiple different email addresses (aliases)—even from entirely different custom domains—to a single Mailbox!
2. Why This Matters
This separation between where emails are received (aliases) and where they are stored (mailboxes) gives you incredible flexibility and power:
- Cost Efficiency: Instead of paying for a separate account for
info@,sales@, andsupport@, you can create one single "Business Mailbox" and route all three addresses to it. - Easy Organization: Handle multiple business domains in one unified hub without logging in and out of different accounts constantly.
- Isolated Logins: Give team members their own secure mailbox credentials to handle customer support, keeping your primary admin dashboard completely hidden and safe.
3. Core Mailbox Features
🔑 Isolated Mailbox Logins
Each mailbox you create has its own unique Slug (username) and Password. Users can log in directly to the My Mailbox app using these credentials, completely separated from your administrative dashboard.
🌐 Cross-Domain Compatibility
MelMe allows you to route aliases from different custom domains to the exact same mailbox. For example, hello@brandA.com and hello@brandB.com can deliver to the same "General Queries" mailbox seamlessly.
✍️ Custom Sender Names
You can specify a "Sender Name" for each mailbox (e.g. "Support Team"). When you send emails from this mailbox, recipients will see this professional name in their inbox.
4. Common Mistakes
- Trying to log in with an email address: When logging in to My Mailbox, do not enter
info@yourdomain.com. Always log in using your Mailbox Slug (e.g.,info-inbox) and the password you set for it. - Deleting an alias and expecting emails to disappear: Deleting an alias only stops future incoming emails. The emails that already arrived inside your Mailbox will remain safely stored.
5. Tips
Recommended Strategy: Set up a single "Support Inbox" Mailbox for your customer service team. Route multiple aliases (help@, support@, questions@) to this single mailbox so your team can handle all inquiries in one collaborative workspace.
