Aliases Overview

Learn what aliases are in MelMe and how they route messages to keep your inbox clean.

1. Overview

An Alias is a virtual email address built using your custom domain (e.g., support@yourcompany.com, sales@yourcompany.com, or hello@yourcompany.com).

Unlike a traditional email inbox, an alias doesn't have a login or permanent storage of its own. Instead, it acts as a smart router, immediately catching any incoming email sent to that address and forwarding or storing it according to your configurations.

2. Why This Matters

Creating aliases offers massive benefits for both business and personal use:

  • Professional Image: Set up separate addresses for different purposes (e.g., invoices@, jobs@, newsletter@) to look like a fully structured business from day one.
  • Inbox Security: Stop giving your primary personal email address to online shopping sites or services. Instead, generate a specific alias for each site. If a site leaks your email or starts spamming you, just turn off the alias!
  • Clean Organization: Route different business functions to the appropriate team members or folders effortlessly.

3. How to Use It (Choosing the Right Alias Type)

In MelMe, there are two primary routing modes for aliases:

  1. Forward Aliases: Incoming emails are redirected instantly to your primary personal address (e.g. yourname@gmail.com).
  2. Mailbox Aliases: Incoming emails are stored inside a secure MelMe inbox (Mailbox) so you can log in, view, and reply professionally.

4. Common Mistakes

  • Treating an Alias as a Full Login Account: Remember, you cannot log in to MelMe's My Mailbox app using an alias. You can only log in using a Mailbox Slug!
  • Typos in destination addresses: When setting up a forward alias, double-check that your destination email is spelled perfectly, or you will miss incoming messages.

5. Tips

Recommended Setup: Create a general hello@yourdomain.com alias to act as your primary contact point on your website, routing it to a collaborative Mailbox that your team can access.
