Mailbox Aliases

Learn how mailbox-routed aliases work, how they store messages within MelMe, and when to use them.

1. Overview

A Mailbox Alias is an email address that routes all incoming emails directly into a secure, isolated inbox container inside MelMe (known as a Mailbox). Instead of forwarding messages out, these emails are permanently stored inside MelMe's secure servers, and can be viewed, managed, and replied to using the My Mailbox app.

2. Why This Matters

Mailbox aliases are essential for professional, custom-branded business communications:

  • Complete Professionalism: Because emails are stored inside MelMe, you can compose and reply to messages directly under your custom brand (e.g. billing@mycompany.com). The recipient will never see your personal email address.
  • Collaboration & Access: You can route multiple mailbox aliases to a single mailbox, allowing team members to monitor different customer service addresses from one shared workspace.
  • High Security: Emails remain isolated inside MelMe instead of being sent to third-party consumer mailboxes.

3. How to Use It (Best Use Cases)

Use Mailbox Aliases for all professional, customer-facing business interactions:

  • Customer Support: Route support@yourdomain.com to a Mailbox for team access.
  • Invoices & Billing: Route billing@yourdomain.com to a mailbox to keep financials secure.
  • Executive Addresses: Set up personal business mailboxes (e.g., ceo@yourdomain.com).

Setting up a Mailbox Alias:

  1. Ensure you have created a Mailbox first (under the Mailboxes tab).
  2. Go to the Aliases tab and click Create Alias.
  3. Set the Routing Mode to Mailbox.
  4. Select your desired target Mailbox from the dropdown list.
  5. Save the configuration.

4. Common Mistakes

  • Routing to a Deactivated Mailbox: If the Mailbox you selected is currently set to "Inactive" or "Disabled," emails sent to this alias will bounce. Make sure your target mailbox is active.
  • Confusing the Mailbox Slug with the Alias: When logging in to read these emails, you must log in using your Mailbox Slug and the mailbox password, not the alias email address.

5. Tips

Shared Workspaces: You can link aliases from entirely different domains to the same mailbox! For example, you can route sales@brandA.com and sales@brandB.com to the exact same "Sales Mailbox" to manage both projects at once.
