Aliases
Activating and Deactivating Aliases
Learn how to temporarily turn your email aliases on or off with a single click.
1. Overview
Every alias in MelMe has a status toggle: Active or Inactive. When an alias is deactivated, it remains in your dashboard list, but our servers will immediately reject any new email sent to that address.
2. Why This Matters
Sometimes, you need to stop receiving emails from a specific address, but you don't want to permanently delete the alias:
- Spam Control: If an alias you registered on a shopping site starts getting flooded with junk mail, you can toggle it to "Inactive" to instantly block the spam.
- Temporary Campaigns: If you run a marketing campaign with an address like
promo-july@yourdomain.com, you can deactivate it once the month is over. - Security: Quickly disable an address if you suspect it has been compromised, without losing its historical settings.
3. How to Use It
Step-by-Step Toggle:
- Log in to the MelMe Admin Panel and click Aliases.
- Locate the alias you wish to change in the list.
- Find the Active Status switch next to the alias name.
- Click the switch:
- Green / Toggled On: The alias is Active and routing emails.
- Grey / Toggled Off: The alias is Inactive. Any emails sent to this address will bounce back to the sender as undeliverable.
4. Common Mistakes
- Forgetting that deactivation causes bounces: If a customer or client tries to write to an inactive alias, they will receive a "mailbox unavailable" bounce email. Make sure you don't accidentally deactivate important active business lines!
- Expecting historical emails to disappear: Deactivating an alias only blocks new incoming emails. If the alias is a Mailbox Alias, all historically received emails will remain safe in your mailbox storage.
5. Tips
Important Note: If you deactivate a Forward Alias, no emails will be routed to your personal inbox. Always make sure to reactivate it if you are expecting a verification code or reset link!
