Receiving Your First Email

Step-by-step instructions on how to test and verify that your new email routing is working perfectly.

1. Overview

Now that you have configured your domain, created an alias, and set up your routing (forwarding or mailbox), it's time to run a live test to verify that you can successfully receive emails.

2. Why This Matters

Testing your incoming email routing is the ultimate proof that your DNS records (specifically your MX records) were configured correctly. Running a test now ensures that you don't miss any critical client or business emails later on.

3. How to Use It

Step 1: Prepare the Test Email

  1. Log in to an external email account that is not connected to MelMe (such as your personal Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo account).
  2. Start composing a new email.

Step 2: Send to Your Alias

  1. In the To field, type your newly created MelMe alias (e.g., hello@yourdomain.com).
  2. Write a clear subject line (e.g., "MelMe Routing Test #1").
  3. Type a short message in the body and click Send.

Step 3: Verify Delivery

Depending on the routing mode you chose for the alias, check for the email:

  • If routed to Forward Mode: Open your personal forwarding inbox (e.g., yourname@gmail.com). The email should arrive within a few moments!
  • If routed to Mailbox Mode:
    1. Go to the My Mailbox page on your MelMe app.
    2. Log in using your mailbox slug and password.
    3. Check the Inbox tab. Your email should be sitting right there!

4. Common Mistakes

  • Testing from the Same Mailbox: Do not attempt to send a test email from the same Mailbox you are testing. Always send the test email from an entirely external email provider (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.).
  • Premature Testing: If you just updated your DNS settings, the records might not have propagated yet. If the email bounces or doesn't arrive immediately, wait 15–30 minutes and try again.

5. Tips

Checking Logs: As an Admin, you can also view real-time email logs. Go to your Admin Dashboard and look at the recent email transaction list to see if the email was successfully processed, forwarded, or if it failed.
